Ontario's Minimum Wage Set to Increase on Oct 1st, 2024
The minimum wage in Ontario will rise by $0.65 to $17.20 per hour for the most workers as of October 1, 2024.
After British Columbia, Ontario now has the second-highest provincial minimum wage in Canada, with a 3.9% increase over the current rate.
The following are the new minimum wage rates in Ontario:
- General Minimum Wage: $17.20
- Student Minimum Wage: $16.20
- Homeworker Minimum Wage: $18.90
“Our government is assisting nearly one million workers in increasing their income for themselves and their families under Premier Ford’s direction,” stated David Piccini, the labour minister, immigration, training, and skills development.
Based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index (CPI), the decision attempts to give workers financial relief in the face of growing living expenses.
An employee who works 40 hours a week at the general minimum wage could see an increase in pay of up to $1,355 annually. In 2023, 935,600 workers were making $17.20 an hour or less.
If an employer pays less than the minimum wage, employees can file a claim with the Ministry of Labour within two years.
According to the government, this change aligns with the Working for Workers Four Act, 2024, which strengthens safeguards for Ontario’s workers. Notably, the Act ensures that employers cannot withhold wages because of a dine-and-dash incident, strengthening wage protections for workers in industries like restaurants and hospitality. It also assists injured workers and is the first in Canada to outlaw the requirement for work experience in job postings.
